Horse Schooling in Devon

We ride and progress your horse — flatwork, groundwork, long-reining and lungeing

Life gets busy. Work, family, weather and injury all chip away at saddle time, and horses without regular work can quickly lose the fitness and education you have spent years building. Fernfield Equestrian offers professional horse schooling across Devon — we come to your yard, ride and develop your horse for you, and hand them back sharper, softer and more confident.

Schooling is delivered by a British Horse Society Accredited Professional Coach with experience producing horses up to Elementary Dressage, jumping courses of fences and riding confidently in open spaces and groups.

What a Schooling Session Looks Like

Every horse is different, so every schooling session starts with a conversation — what would you like worked on, what has been frustrating you lately, what does the horse have coming up? A typical session might include 10–15 minutes of warm-up, focused work on the agreed goals (transitions, contact, lateral work, pole-work or similar), and then a calm cool-down.

You will get an honest write-up of how the horse went, what felt easy, what needs more time, and what you can practise yourself next time you ride.

Flatwork, Lateral Work and Contact

Most of our schooling work centres on flatwork and dressage development — the things that pay dividends in every other discipline. We focus on rhythm, balance, suppleness and contact, layering in lateral work (leg yield, shoulder-in, travers) as the horse is ready. The end goal is a horse who is light to the aids, honest in the contact and a pleasure to ride.

Groundwork, Lungeing and Long-Reining

Not all valuable training happens from the saddle. Lungeing, long-reining and groundwork are powerful tools — for young horses learning the basics, for returning-to-work horses regaining fitness, and for established horses needing to rebuild a particular skill without the rider's weight in the way. All of these are part of our schooling offer.

We travel across Devon and into North Cornwall for schooling, including Okehampton, Tavistock, Exeter, Crediton, Tiverton, Hatherleigh, Barnstaple, Launceston, Bude and the surrounding villages. Travel is included in your quote based on distance from our base.
